Team Camp History

Team camp was invented at Edinboro University in the summer of 1983 By former Edinboro Athletic Director and basketball coach Jim Mcdonald. The camp lasted for 5 days, Sunday to Friday. There were 12 boys High School teams from 3 states. Of the 12 teams, 3 went on to become state champions, 1 was a state runner up and the other 8 all made the State Playoffs. My team the Williamsport Millionaires became the first Big School AAAA undefeated 30-0 PA State Champions. AAAA was the highest classification in Pa until the 2016 – 2017 season. No one had ever heard of a team camp before 1983. The first day coaches refereed the games they were not playing. This lasted for one day. Each morning a different coach gave a lecture to the players. This lasted for two days. Players didn’t come to camp to sit and listen to lectures, they came to play basketball. From the1983-84 30-0 season on I made team camp a part of my program. We went to team camp every summer until I retired. I attribute part of the success of the Williamsport Millionaire Boys Basketball team to Team Camp in the summer. Our team were district champions 19 of the 21 seasons I coached including a state record 17 district championships in a row. We advanced past the first round of the PA state playoffs 18 times. We are a public school forbidden to recruit athletes. Keystone State Camps took over the team camp in1984, added Slippery Rock University and eventually had camps at Gettysburg, Albright, California Unv of PA, Juniata, Bloomsburg, Swarthmore, Bryn Mawr, Franklin & Marshall Susquehanna, Edinboro and today at Edinboro, Elizabethtown, Washington and Jefferson, and Northampton CC.
